Who is a migrant?
There is no internationally accepted legal definition of the word “migrant”. At Amnesty International, like many other organizations and human rights organisations, we see migrants as people living outside their home country who are not asylum seekers or refugees. Some immigrants leave their country to work, study or live with family members abroad. Some feel the need to leave the country because of poverty, political turmoil, gang violence, natural disasters or other harsh conditions. It is important to note that;
Many people who do not meet the refugee definition may be at risk when they return to their country. Because even if they are not fleeing persecution, the human rights of migrants must be protected and respected regardless of their legal status in the country of residence. States must protect all immigrants from racist and xenophobic violence, exploitation and forced labor. Immigrants should not be detained or forcibly returned to the country without a legal reason.
Why do people leave their country?
There are many reasons that make it extremely difficult and dangerous for people to stay in the country. For example, children, women and men; for reasons such as violence, war, hunger, extreme poverty, or gender identity or sexual orientation; They are forced to leave their country due to the devastating effects of climate change or other natural disasters. They often face many of these difficult situations at the same time. People do not leave their country to escape danger. Some believe they are more likely to find a job in another country because they have the education or capital to take advantage of that country’s opportunities. Some live with relatives or friends abroad, or start or finish their education in another country.
